  • How does Bio-GO-SHIP relate to GO-SHIP?

    Bio-GO-SHIP adds biological measurements to GO-SHIP hydrographic sections.

    GO-SHIP repeats ocean transects to track heat, carbon, and other physical and chemical properties. Bio-GO-SHIP coordinates plankton sampling and related measurements on those same lines so biology can be compared with the physical and chemical context.

  • How is Bio-GO-SHIP data shared?

    Data sharing follows the cruise and investigator agreements for each dataset.

    This site does not host a database. Public archives are listed on the Data page. Cruise plans and publications can also point to a specific DOI when one exists.

  • What is a Bio-GO-SHIP protocol?

    A protocol is a shared method for collecting or processing samples so measurements can be compared across cruises.

    The team is planning a Protocols page with a title, short overview, category, and a downloadable PDF or Word file for each method. Until that page exists, ask the relevant investigator if you need a current SOP.

  • What is Bio-GO-SHIP?

    Bio-GO-SHIP is a community program that measures plankton across the global ocean.

    It quantifies the molecular diversity, size spectrum, chemical composition, and abundances of plankton communities, alongside the physical and chemical measurements made by GO-SHIP.

  • What kinds of samples are collected?

    Typical Bio-GO-SHIP work includes ‘omics, plankton imaging, particle chemistry, and optical measurements.

    Exact packages vary by cruise. The program aims to quantify plankton communities across large spatial and vertical scales, and eventually over time as repeat occupations continue.
